An Act of God or a Coincidence?
By Gilbert Griffiths
Jack was a very helpful and generous man. He wasn't much to look at, being of medium height and wiry build. He wore glasses with lenses so thick you were reminded of someone looking through the bottom of a Coca-Cola bottle. Jack's greatest feature was his big heart. Whenever anyone in the community needed help with anything, Jack was there. If someone need a ride to town, Jack would take them and wait while they did whatever they had to do and then he would take them home. If someone needed help digging their garden, putting up a fence, repairing a water line or cutting firewood, Jack was there. He provided fresh fruit from his orchard and fresh vegetables from his garden to anyone that needed them. He was my Dad's best friend. The two of them spent many days cutting firewood and sport fishing from Jack's boat. He would compete with my Mother to see who could get the first ripe tomato, or the biggest one. When the folk's ancient hot water heater gave out and they couldn't afford a new one, Jack found a part, somewhere, that fixed it. After Dad got prostate cancer and his treatments made him cranky and miserable, Jack was there. Even when Dad treated him badly, Jack would just smile and take him fishing or give him a shoulder to lean on. Jack was quite a bit younger than Dad, but in January 2003, he had a heart attack and died. Dad was devastated. The day of Jack's funeral was overcast and rainy, but about an hour before the funeral, a south-east breeze started to blow and the sky slowly started to clear. As Mom and Dad drove toward the next community where the church holding the funeral service was located, the sun burst through the clouds and a beautiful rainbow formed. As my parents neared the church, they were amazed to see that the end of the rainbow touched the church, causing it to gleam and sparkle. Mom and Dad were convinced that God was honouring Jack for all of his good deeds and providing a path for his soul to go to heaven. What do you think? Was God honouring Jack or was it just a coincidence?

Contributor's Note
A month after Jack's death, my father entered hospital. He nearly died the first night he was there when his temperature went over 106 degrees. The docotors saved him, but his mind was damaged by the high body heat and he never recovered, dying of complications caused by his prostate cancer in September 2006.

It's a nice idea, but in my view this was definitely a coincidence. If acts of God like this really happened, and considering all the people who die all the time, there would be constant occurrences of rainbows everywhere. God, assuming He exists, would not discriminate.
That's a nice idea, Nick, but God, assuming He exists, would not be bound by either the laws of Social Convention or Random Occurrence and would do as he bl**dy well pleased, I guess.
What a story! Who knows if it was a coincidence or not (other than God Himself)? It just saddens me sometimes that people like that are taken away from us prematurely while other seemingly much less deserved souls (who am I to judge?)... well... you know... It just makes me wonder sometimes about the will of an all-knowing and loving God. But again -- what do I know?

Thanks James, I guess I should have added this to the story, but I forgot about it until I talked to Mom and told her about writing the Intel. She said that the thing that amazed her and Dad was that the end of the rainbow stayed focussed on the church even when they got to it. Usually as you approach the area where the end of the rainbow is visible, it moves away. Apparently it remained shining on the windows at the end of the church until the minister approached the dais and then it slowly faded away. This is what got everyone so emotional about the whole thing. As I understand it, God created us in his image. Then he gave us free will. I think he's just sitting there watching what each of us does with what we were given. Gilbert
Coincidences happen when God wants to do something anonymously. I think He gets a kick out of watching people react sometimes. If you were God, what would you do for fun?

Hi Franklyn, If I were God, and thank heavens I'm not, because he gets blamed for just about everything, I would sit back and watch the human race the same way I used to watch my children. Just to see how they reacted to what they saw, heard, smelled and felt. After my kids moved away, I frequently sat on benches in shopping malls and just watched the people. It is fascinating what you will see, and its completely free. Gilbert
Thank you for sharing this thought provoking story, Gilbert. Close family, friends, sickness , health, help, generosity, life, death and rainbows all make our short time here on earth worth living each day to it's fullest. Best wishes. Frederick

Thank you Frederick, I'm glad you enjoyed it.
I would say it was an "Act of God" to symbolize the love of all those who loved Your Dad's friend. Witnesses were blessed.

Thank you. I agree. When the rainbow didn't move even when people got up close made me realize that it wasn't an ordinary rainbow...to me it was a tribute. gilbertg
